The Arts and Science College was inaugurated on 20 June 1960 by Shri Y. B. Chavan, the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra to serve the ever-growing educational needs of student from North and Central Mumbai Suburbs, and was the gift of the South Indians in Mumbai to the then newly-born State of Maharashtra. The Commerce Stream at the Degree level was started in 1980-81. Affiliated to the University of Mumbai, the college has an impressive strength of over 5,000 students drawn from all sections of this cosmopolitan city.
We are an institution which:
Sets high standards of academic excellence
Has consistently produced merit rankers at University Examinations
Boasts of a better result than that of the University
Provides an inspirational value-based educational environment
Prides itself in its impeccable discipline
Produces students who are motivated leaders
Believes in nurturing a cohesive society by encouraging the economically underpriviledged sections, the differently abled and girl students
Our mission and vision are geared towards an education that seeks to mould ‘humane’ individuals who are acutely aware of their responsibility towards the human society. In order to realize our goal we provide every possible support – intellectual, technological (The Pragnya Centre and the Centre for Excellence) and emotional (Spandan – our Mentorship Cell). Initiatives such as the Value Lab, Our Institutional Social Responsibility Cell and Our Zero Waste Policy ensure that our students become morally, socially and environmentally responsible citizens. In an increasingly materialistic environment, our institution has dared to follow a policy of “Admission strictly by merit” and no Capitation fee is charged. We believe in leading by example. The adoption of a village in Karjat, called Kawthewadi, is a good illustration of this. The youth of our nation are the most important assets we depend on. We hope that the students who step outside the portals of the college will be individuals who are worthy of that trust. We are confident that our efforts will fructify in the form of a self-aware pro-active youth engaged in nation-building.
